New Delhi: A mother’s skin goes through a number of changes during pregnancy and post-childbirth. With the baby keeping her busy day and night, skincare often takes a backseat. Not all skin changes post-pregnancy is bad and it is perfectly ok to bask in the glowing skin but not taking care of the skin can cause acne, melasma, stretch marks, puffy eyes and even dark circles. In this article, Dr Rinky Kapoor, Consultant Dermatologist, Cosmetic Dermatologist & Dermato-Surgeon at The Esthetic Clinics, Mumbai shares safe beauty tips for new mothers.

When breastfeeding there is always a doubt in the mind about which product to use and which do not. And let’s face it taking care of the baby eliminates the possibility of long spa visits. Just 10 minutes for your skin every day will get your skin back on track. You can continue with your following favourite beauty treatments without fear

  1. Hair colour, perming, straightening, hair rebonding: Make sure that your scalp is not itchy or irritable before you book an appointment for a hair service.
  2. For oral: Basic dental treatments.
  3. Have pedicure and manicure: Keep your nails short to avoid getting dirt under them.
  4. For the body: Have a good massage oil massage.
  5. Get a leg or bikini wax: Waxing does not interfere with the function of milk ducts. However, your skin might be still sensitive so make sure you do a patch test before waxing.

Professional cosmetic treatments are also not a no-no and some dermatologists suggested treatments that are safe for the new mother’s skin and perk up the skin with no harm to the child:

  • Chemical peels: Acid peels are very effective in removing the dead skin cells, and rejuvenate the skin. Peels can be safely used when breastfeeding and are most appropriate in the winters
  • Dermal fillers and Botox: They run a very low risk of any systemic absorption in the body and if you are looking to reduce the fine lines, frown lines, dull and tired skin and tired eyes then trained medical personals can help you effectively.
  • Low-level laser therapy: The laser does not penetrate so deep that it would affect breastfeeding. Post-pregnancy laser treatment can be used to treat sore nipples, reduce stretch marks, acne, fine lines, and melasma.

Stay away from any invasive procedures like fat reduction, microblading, tattoos etc.

Ingredients to shop for

If you don’t have the time to go out to the spa then here is a list of skincare ingredients that you can include in your daily routine:

  • Vitamin C: It is the best friend to the new mother. You can use a vitamin C based cream or facewash for skin rejuvenation. You can also use home remedies that contain Vitamin C ingredients like lemon to give your skin a boost.
  • Benzoyl peroxide: it is the safest anti-acne arsenal in your skincare kitty. Use it in the amount suggested by the skin specialist.
  • Zinc oxide: Yes, the skin always needs sunscreen whether you are pregnant or not. Instead of chemical sunscreens opt for zinc oxide-based physical sunscreens so that the absorption is minimal.

Following the basic skincare routine of cleanse tone and moisturize in the morning and night will keep your skin glowing and supple the whole day long. Sleep when the baby sleeps and don’t forget to include some basic me time and exercise in your daily routine.
