When it comes to skincare, one cannot have a concrete plan in place. Though there are certain skin-related problems that are common to everyone, our skin types are very different and unique, can also be treated a bit differently. In fact, our skin also reacts differently to changing seasons. As the monsoon sets in, there is humidity in the air while other days can be quite dry.

Breakouts and dry skin, which may seem like a rare combination, can be quite a common sight in this confusing weather. Though acne, seems like a problem for those with oily or combination skin, those with dry skin can also have them from time to time if proper care is not taken.

Acne is caused because of clogged pores. When the top layer of the skin is extremely dry it can cause pores to clog (because of dry flakes) and microscopic cracks develop in the skin that gives the acne bacteria a place to thrive and multiply and spread.

One also needs to remember that during this time, one shouldn’t skip moisturising at all. In fact, it is very important to keep the skin hydrated. Moisturise as soon as you pat dry your skin and apply toner or serum. For dry skin, moisturise at least twice daily and chose a moisturiser that suits you. One must look for products that contain important ingredients like hyaluronic acid, glycerine, as these are highly emollient. Make sure you choose an oil-free, non-comedogenic, and fragrance-free brand.

How to treat acne when you have ultra-dry skin?

Acne does not discriminate with skin type. People with ultra-dry skin should use products that treat the skin gently. Don’t start using acne products unless you are very sure that you have an acne problem. To treat acne here are some steps you need to take.

  1. Cleanse with non-foaming cleanser
  2. Never forget to moisturize with an oil free water based moisturizer
  3. Use anti-acne products as directed and only on the acne prone area.
  4. Protect your skin from harsh elements
  5. Stick to a routine and give your skin some time to adjust.

Are there any lifestyle changes that can be made?

Just looking after your skin well is the first step to prevent dryness, acne, and other problems. Basic lifestyle incorporations such as following the CTM and sunscreen routine every day, using non-comedogenic products, eat vegetables, nuts, seeds and colourful fruits, drink water to hydrate your skin, don’t rub or touch the skin, and don’t wash your skin too often. Opt for safe makeup and remove the makeup once you are home.

Opt for gentle products for your entire skincare regimen. Salicylic acid, benzoyl peroxide, and adapalene are the most common acne-fighting ingredients but they can dry the skin. Therefore, use them with a proper moisturiser and never forget to wear sunscreen during the day.
