A Homemade Anti-Blemish Scrub For Smooth, Glowing Skin

Infused with the goodness of malic acid, magnesium, and terpinen-4-ol—known to fight foreign invaders—this quick-fix DIY concoction will leave your skin feeling supple and spotless.

While potent, chemical formulas address a wide range of skincare concerns—including acne, eczema, and pigmentation—homemade blends have similar benefits to offer, minus the after-effects of applying harsh, synthetic products on the skin.

Investing in a market-sold potion that promises to bid adieu to your beauty woes requires an abundance of research, knowledge, and possibly a consultation with your dermatologist. However, age-old, tried-and-tested homemade recipes, prepared using effective ingredients that are known to tackle and eliminate specific skin ailments, are a safe and reliable route to flawless skin.

Cosmetic dermatologist, Dr Rinky Kapoor shares her nutrient-rich DIY body scrub recipe that is perfect for those suffering from recurrent breakouts.

Ingredients:

¼ a cup of Apple Cider Vinegar

1 cup of Chickpea Flour

1 tbsp of Dried Peppermint Leaves

10 drops of Tea Tree Oil

Directions:

1) Blitz the above mentioned ingredients in a blender to obtain a smooth paste.

2) Generously apply the mixture on your body and leave it to dry for a few minutes before gently scrubbing.

3) Rinse away with lukewarm water afterwards.

Benefits of the Body Scrub

Chickpeas (popularly known as ‘besan’), are a rich source of magnesium and zinc that help reduce fine lines and wrinkles, along with balancing out fatty acids in the body which increase the elasticity of skin. The nutrient-laden ingredient works to get rid of an uneven skin tone, acne spots, and free radicals. Its anti-inflammatory properties and potent antioxidants also combat zits and keep a check on sebum production, while maintaining the pH balance of your skin.

A mild astringent agent, peppermint leaves help get rid of dead skin cells, unclog pores, reduce skin inflammation, and rejuvenate your skin. The Vitamin A and C content present in the leaves work to minimise the appearance of spots and scars. Peppermint also serves medicinal properties and is often used as a herbal remedy for hives, rashes, poison oak, or poison ivy.

Apple cider vinegar consists of acetic acid and alpha hydroxy acid which serves anti-inflammatory properties by absorbing excess oil and unclogging pores. Tea tree oil, on the other hand, possesses antibacterial, antiseptic and anti-inflammatory properties that make it an effective wound-healer.

Things to Keep in Mind While Trying Out a DIY Scrub:

1) If you possess a dry skin type, avoid exfoliating more than once a month.

2) Do a patch test to ensure that the concoction doesn’t cause an allergic reaction on your body.

3) Dry brushing before scrubbing will increase the benefits of using a body scrub.

4) Ensure that you apply a generous amount of moisturiser on your skin, post application of a body scrub.

5) Store any DIY scrub in a clean, dry jar, away from direct sunlight.
